In student activities, there always lies an element of liability, as in many aspects of our litigious lives these days. Aside from accomodations made to provide the best experience for all students, we also must make accomodations for the safety of all students. On top of that, we must protect ourselves against the students and their parents that in case of an unfortunate incident, the university does not become (fill in student or parent name) university.
I used to kind of shrug my shoulders at liability – it was just an unfortunate piece of paperwork or a phone call that needed to be made to cover our collective butt. These days are gone!
Last night, a student group held “Manhunt”, basically a large hide and seek game that originated from the Student Center. Because the student leading failed to make the correct announcement, students took off running through the student center and out the doors. Yours truly almost fainted as I watched them, praying that no one would get hurt. What has happened to me? Over night, I’ve become a mom, worrying about my kids skinning their knee. But I’ll be honest, it’s not out of concern for safety, it’s out of concern of lawsuit.
Maybe I need therapy or a support group….or a cry.
