Recycling #greenweek

I’m making this my own personal green week (earth day isn’t until April); it’s a topic I’ve been wanting to write on for awhile and now that I’m turning the page into 2010, it felt like the time was right.

I’m going to start with the most obvious part of being green to most people, which is recycling.  My parents and family have been recycling since I was 10 years old, I think (18 years).

Needless to say, I was more than shocked when I went into a student union at a nationally recognized institution during my job interview process and did not see ONE SINGLE RECYCLING BIN.  Forgive me, but what the hell were they thinking?  Does your place of business/office/house have a recycling bin?  If not, why not?

If your place of business sells plastic or aluminum cans (find the drink machine, I’m 90% certain that you have one), there’s no excuse for not providing ways to recycle these bottles and cans after they’ve been used. Here’s a little information on why this type of recycling is important

Does your office use paper?  Unless they’re writing on goat vellum or using smoke signals to communicate, I’m certain that you use paper to communicate and document.  There’s absolutely no reason not to use recycling for old paper (and hopefully use less of it, but that’s a topic for another post). Info on why to recycle paper

For those who read this blog in colleges, I think there’s another element to this topic.  We are charged with providing education and creating responsible citizens as well as the specific responsibilities of our day-to-day jobs.  A critical component of that in 2010 is teaching our students to be environmentally responsible.   Here are some resources specifically for campuses
