Great art emerges from an exploration of ideas as well as technique. Elevate your artistic potential in a creative environment that emphasizes both critical thinking and strong visual skills.
About the Studio Art Program
As an art major at Mills, you’ll become part of a tight-knit, collaborative community of creative thinkers encompassing students, faculty, and visiting artists. You’ll receive individual attention from your professors, each of whom is an active professional artist and a dedicated educator. They’ll support you in all aspects of the creative process, from discussing ideas to experimenting with different media to integrating form and content.
Small studio classes will enable you to explore painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, new genres, and electronic arts. Art history courses will give you an understanding of the context of your work and critical theory. Visits to Bay Area museums and connections with Oakland’s vibrant arts community will help fuel your creativity. If you major in studio art, your program will culminate with an exhibition of works by you and other seniors at the Mills College Art Museum. View our for in-depth information on the major and minor.
