On-Campus Research

Students mentored by biology professors are eligible for research stipends from the . Using biology laboratories and other facilities, students have recently conducted research on:

  • Chemosensory pathways in the nematode C. elegans, a type of roundworm
  • Molecular mechanisms underlying vertebrate pair bonding
  • Mitochondrial DNA defects and the progression of neurodegenerative diseases

Students can also join research laboratories supervised by psychology professors. These students coordinate subjects, conduct tests and experiments, collect and analyze data, and present findings at conferences. The labs and areas of investigation include:

  • —Effects of age, culture, weight consciousness, and circadian arousal on memory
  • —Positive psychology and LGBTQ issues, aging attitudes and anxiety, religion and physical activity, intergroup relations and prejudice
  • —Development in children and families during the formative years of pregnancy through age five
  • Psychology and Health Lab—Transgender communities and health; shyness and asthma; and stress, resilience, and vulnerability

Access to Facilities & Equipment
Both the Biology and Psychology Departments are housed in the Betty Irene Moore Natural Sciences Building, awarded the highest rating in environmental design and construction. The building features state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms, and meeting spaces that encourage interdisciplinary collaboration.
