Chinese Language & Culture
Learn Chinese and master the language of one of the world’s biggest economies. Gain cultural knowledge as a tool of empowerment. Transform your perspective, and inspire action on a global scale.
About the Chinese Language & Culture Program
The minor in Chinese language and culture, paired with a major in another field, will prepare you for careers in government, business, education, and technology, fields that require in-depth knowledge of Mandarin, a language of global significance. In small, interactive classes you’ll develop competency in speaking and writing Mandarin while gaining exposure to Chinese culture in and out of the classroom. A wealth of offerings like Chinese New Year in San Francisco, Peking Acrobats in Berkeley, and campus cultural festivals will sharpen critical skills and broaden your viewpoint. You’ll form close relationships with faculty who are dedicated to your success and promote appreciation for intellectual traditions beyond the Western lens. At the end of your sixth semester, you’ll be encouraged to take the nationally recognized OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview), a standardized oral speaking test that’s highly valued by employers and graduate programs.
You’ll have opportunities to deepen your cultural understanding through study abroad programs in China and Taiwan that will provide further immersion in Chinese communities. Students who wish to major in Chinese language and culture may pursue the individualized major option.
