About the Religious Studies Program
Religious studies at Mills investigates religion through the lens of various humanistic disciplines—art history, literature, philosophy, and gender and sexuality studies. In small, collaborative classes, your professors will teach you skills for analyzing the texts, images, beliefs, and rituals of a wide range of religions, from indigenous spiritual traditions to global faiths. You’ll investigate how religious identities intersect with race, class, gender, and ethnicity. You’ll explore the experience of women in religious systems, the role of religions in the construction of gender and sexuality, and feminist perspectives within religious studies.
Professors dedicated to your success will help you customize the interdisciplinary minor so it reflects the interests you’re passionate about and complements your major. In addition to religious studies courses available at Mills, you may choose to cross-register in courses at UC Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union.
The religious literacy you gain through this minor will equip you for thoughtful analysis of contemporary society and for interacting with diverse people. It will also help prepare you for a career in psychology, education, international relations, international business, journalism, government, social services, or law. View our for in-depth information on the minor.
