Oakland, CA—October 8, 2019
Each year our community gathers to mark Convocation, officially kicking off the beginning of the new academic year. During this time we welcome our alums back to campus for Reunion, honor the academic achievements of our students, confer awards and certificates of commendation to our faculty, recognize newly appointed department chairs, and celebrate the graduating class as they set out on their last and final year at Mills.
As part of this fall tradition, we invite Convocation speakers to inspire our community. After opening remarks from the Mills College chaplain, president, and Board of Trustees chair, students Breanna Gingras ’20 and Jahslyn Whitelocke-Chensee ’17, MBA ’20 took to the stage to speak to their fellow students, followed by Viji Nakka-Cammauf ’82, president of the Alumnae Association of Mills College. This year we were also honored to welcome activist, reverend, and scholar Dr. Crystal Jones Lucky to campus to offer her insights and words of inspiration for the coming year. Dr. Lucky, who is associate dean of Baccalaureate Studies for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, associate professor of English at Villanova University, and pastor at Sword of the Spirit Church, reminded our Mills community of the importance of finding balance, remaining open to opportunities in places where you least expect to find them, and using the privileges of education and life experience to lift up those around us.
