As a transfer student and working artist, Veronica was worried that she’d feel out of place at Mills. Instead she found a community that embraced her and an inspiring home in the Art Department. Veronica’s passion for art and her love of the College has encouraged her to pursue an MFA at Mills after she completes her double major.
How has Mills surprised you? I didn’t realize how easy it would be for me to become a part of the Mills community. I’m 10 years older than some of my classmates, and one of my biggest fears was that I would feel out of place because of my age. The students here surprise me every day with their maturity and willingness to help. I am very comfortable being myself and feel rejuvenated being around all these wonderful people.
What are you studying at Mills?一本到国内在线视观看-一道本不卡高清专区-一本在线高清不卡dvd I’m double majoring in art history and studio art. As a practicing artist, it was invaluable for me to learn the history of art as well. I’m passionate about both subjects because they represent a connection for me between art and education—a field I would like to pursue in the future. My childhood art teachers provided direction and focus in my life, and I would like to do this for others.
What's the most thought-provoking assignment or project you've done in class? 一本到国内在线视观看-一道本不卡高清专区-一本在线高清不卡dvd I took the Museum Studies Workshop, where we learned how to curate an exhibition. We used the College’s collection of photographs, including those by Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham. I discovered a direct link from my native Mexico to the Bay Area, and it pulled me closer to Mills. It was a magical moment for me to learn that artists I’d long admired, like Diego Rivera and Edward Weston, were connected to the Mills College Art Museum. It made me realize that I was exactly where I needed to be.
How will you use your education to create positive change for others?一本到国内在线视观看-一道本不卡高清专区-一本在线高清不卡dvd I believe art and its history are fundamental for education, not only in the classroom but in museums. When I was younger, I didn’t always feel represented in museums and I would like to change that. I want all kids to be able to go out and see themselves in the world, to be inspired, and to inspire others.
